Return schemes boost collection of used PET packaging

Deposit Return System (DRS)
The Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) means that when consumers buy a product, they pay an extra deposit. This is returned to them when they bring the empty packaging back.

Current EU regulation says that countries must reach 77% collection rates by 2025 and 90% by 2029 – and a new European law goes even further by proposing DRS collection.

The evolving regulations will create a lot of good additional sources of post-consumer PET bottles for us which can be recycled to food grade r-PET.

Three countries where we have preform production decided to implement the DRS system: Romania, Hungary and Greece. Switzerland has an excellent collection system with a 90-95% collection rate. And Belgium collects about 92% of its PET bottles by the blue bags system.

Good news for the environment, good news for us!
